The blog grows!

Perhaps you’ve noticed some changes here today. Well, I’m very pleased to tell you that later this week I’ll be joined on this blog by Paul Harcourt Davies writing from rural Italy on an even broader range of topics than me, with a photographic emphasis on things macro. And not long after that,  recently returned from [...]

Nature adventures for children in Scotland.

I had an email recently from Mandy Tulloch, lately of the Natural History Centre at Aberdeen University, about a new company she has set up. Wild Child offers nature based learning and fun for nursery aged children in Aberdeen and the north east (of Scotland). In light of the generally poor provision of natural history [...]

Elinchrom Ranger Quadra – 1.

If you read some earlier posts here you’ll know that I’m a bit reticent about offering endorsements until I’ve used a piece of equipment for a long time. But it is awfully tempting to gush about the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra battery flash system I recently took delivery of. This is to replace my clunky Lumedyne [...]

Not-especially -famous photographer Niall Benvie has said that wildlife TV presenters whose ratings are falling should not have millions spent on commissioning their shows when the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as on the conservation of habitat for iconic species like giant pandas.
“Sadly”, commented Mr Benvie today, ” they grab all the attention [...]

British Wildlife Photography Awards website – don’t panic!

If you’ve gone to look for the winners of the British Wildlife Photography Awards at the site previously posted here and found it expired, don’t worry! You can access it here and on Thursday this week, view the winners.

It doesn’t take much…

Time was it was a real bind getting prints done for people we photographed when travelling. But we did it (of should have done!) in the sure knowledge of a welcome should we ever return or, at least, knowing we had done a decent thing. I have done very little photography of really poor people [...]

Niall’s new book.

I’d really like to tell you about the new book I’ve started writing. But my publisher won’t let me. Yet. What I can say is that it will include all my most recent ideas and writings. It’s due out next summer. The daily word quota of 1100 words is flowing easily, which I take as [...]

Europe’s little lion. 3.

A final selection of European lynx – a habituated youngster but at least not in the Black forest or the Polar Zoo! Read the story here.
