Red lights and empty roads. NB.

It’s a quiet country road and you approach a small set of road works. As you do so, the light turns to red. You can see there are no vehicles at the light on the other side nor any approaching. The road is open. So why do so many people stop, letting conditioning master reason? Lights are to manage traffic flow so why be managed by them when there is no other traffic?

Freethinking is anathema for a society where control is central as in the UK. Use your intelligence, initiative, think for yourself and run those (real or metaphorical) lights and you will be punished, declared dangerous…a threat.

Italy has its faults but its citizens defend the right to ‘think’ (except for those who vote for Berlusconi): at off-peak times, at night in cities, all traffic lights turn to flashing amber. Proceed with care – and most do because there are idiots around who do not. Another allegory.. think for yourself and take responsibility. Looking from afar it depresses me that the British people once fiercely defensive of their independence, individuality, creative talents …everywhere, let others (of zero talent) call the shots. Who’s for a revolution – I’ll be ‘revolting’ if you will too!
